Carillion Civil Engineering in Scotland mark Sustainability Week

Support services and construction company Carillion is marking its annual Sustainability Week in June with a raft of initiatives in Scotland to help the environment and the communities in which it works.

Carillion Civil Engineering employees working on projects in Scotland including a flood prevention scheme in Braid Burn for the City of Edinburgh Council and a framework contract for Scottish Water, have taken up the challenge to do their bit for the environment this week and help communities in the process.

Scottish events include providing approximately 80 hours of time to help put up signage and manage traffic to and from the Lockerbie Gala day; improving the environment at Merkland School.

Our Braid Burn team will be creating a small garden at Glenashton, a community flat gifted to older people living in sheltered housing by Edinburgh City Council and working with Dunedin School, a local special school promote the importance of safety in the community near to the site.
Finally, in Fife the local team will be creating raised planting beds for older people so that they can take part in gardening activities, at Grants Bank Care Home, Pilmuir Street, Fife. Company, PDM has agreed to give materials free of charge for the Fife project and Speedy Hire has agreed to give plant equipment hire free of charge for all of the projects.

From June 2 , to coincide with World Environment Day (June 5) Carillion plc will be holding a series of events in both the UK and in other areas of the world including the Middle East and launching initiatives aimed at raising awareness of sustainability issues.

This year’s theme is ‘Kick the Habit! – Towards a Low Carbon Economy,’ and each day of the week will focus on a different topic – energy, transport, waste, education in the community and health and wellbeing.

Carillion offices and project sites nationally and internationally will be getting involved and teaming up with local schools and groups to raise awareness of sustainability issues and work on projects that benefit the environment and communities.

A host of activities are lined up for the week including how to calculate your carbon footprint, tips on greener driving, composting, recycling, health checks, saving energy, quizzes and competitions and a wear green day.

This year Carillion is working with the children’s charity Barnardo’s and any money raised from events held during the week will be donated to the charity which supports children to be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination.
